Q. What is the gift of God?
A. "The gift of God is eternal life" Romans 6:23
Q. What is eternal life?
A. It is the exact opposite of death. The wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life" (Romans 6:23). Eternal life is continued existence with no death. One writer describes it like this: "If a little bird should fly from heaven to earth and pick up one grain of sand and take it back to heaven, and repeat it once every millions years (one grain of sand every million years), by the time it had taken every grain of sand from this earth to heaven, it would be but a moment in eternity."
Eternal life is also a different quality of life than we experience now. The apostle Paul wrote that now we live in weakness, but then we will live in power; now we are perishable, but then we will be imperishable (1Corinthians 15:35-44, RSV)
Q. How can I have eternal life?
A. "And this is the record, that God hath given to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son" (1 John 5:11). For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth I him should not perish, but have everlasting life" (John 3:16). We can have eternal life only in Jesus. When we look to Him in faith and believe on Him as our personal Saviour from sin, we have eternal life as a gift from God.
Q. How can I be sure?
A. "These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life" (1Jonn 5:13). "And this is the promise that he hath promised us, even eternal life" (1John 2:25)
Q. How do I believe on Jesus?
A. "For by grace are e saved through faith; and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God; not of works, lest any man should boast" (Ephesians 2:8,9). We can never be saved by our own efforts. We can never believe on Jesus by trying to make ourselves believe. The Holy Spirit from God speaks to us; He points out that we are sinners deserving death. He shows us Jesus , who died for our sins; and as we realize the Saviour's love for us and respond in love to Him, saving faith in Jesus floods our life as a gift from God. We accept Jesus as our own personal Saviour, and we have eternal life.
